Ranch-Way Feeds at Loveland Feed & Grain Mill (c) Ruth Soller

Ranch-Way Feeds at Loveland Feed & Grain Mill (c) Ruth Soller

This aged and rusty Ranch-Way Feeds sign caught my eye in the Loveland Feed & Grain Mill. The patterns and colors of the chipped paint and weathered deterioration were challenging to capture in paint. I experimented with Golden Fiber Paste and Golden Light Molding Paste in building up the texture of the bricks. This painting will be available at Tenfold Collective in Loveland, CO, Friday July 8th from 4-9 pm during a city-wide event recognizing the Artspace Inc. agreement to purchase and renovate the historic 1891 Loveland Feed & Grain Mill into a multi-purpose space for the arts.

Howe Scale at Loveland Feed & Grain Mill | Ruth Soller - Blog

Howe Scale at Loveland Feed & Grain Mill Ruth Soller - Blog

This Howe gooseneck benchtop scale inside Loveland Feed & Grain Mill is more rare than the Fairbanks Scale in my previous painting. Notice the green and the red and white state inspection stickers on the edge of the scale, evidence that the scale had been certified accurate. The 1891 Loveland Feed & Grain Mill in Colorado ceased operations in 2003.

Horseshoe Door at Loveland Feed & Grain Mill | Ruth Soller - Blog

Horseshoe Door at Loveland Feed & Grain Mill Ruth Soller - Blog

This old and worn door was the main entry from the west side loading dock of the historic 1891 Loveland Feed & Grain Mill. You can see the passage of time as you observe the layers of renovations to the original red brick building. At one time the building was painted a light blue and the doors were a cadette grey-blue. A later coat of white paint covered exterior and interior walls; then this paint has worn through to reveal under layers. I replaced the outline of a standard quarter horse shoe with a large draft horse shoe; because I have seen early photos of draft horses pulling wagonloads of feed from this busy mill in the early 1900's. What memories does this bring to your mind?
